Creeting St Mary

A simple village sign made of wrought iron depicting the church of St Mary and some bulrushes by the River Gipping.
The Name and Population
The parish also includes the hamlet of Creeting Bottoms. In 2005 the parish population was 710 which decreased to 697 at the 2011 census. Called Cratingas or Cratingis in 1086 and Creting Sancte Marie in 1254. The name means the settlement or family or followers of a man called Craeta, originating from Old English.
Other Points of Interest
The churchyard here also included the church of All Saints. This church fell in to disrepair and was demolished in 1801. All Saints probably had a round tower.
