Exning

Old sign - still in position

New sign

The Sign
There are four village signs located on the approaches to the village, one of which is in the old style and looking a bit worn showing Boudicca on her chariot. The other three signs are identical and still show Boudicca on her chariot as well as the church of St Martin on the left and a jockey on the right (representing horse racing in the area). In the foreground are two children feeding the ducks; there is an annual duck race held in June.

The Name and Population
The population was 1,960 at the 2011 census. It was called Essel in the Domesday Book. The name means "Gyxen's people", from Old English.

Other Points of Interest

Exning is the most westerly village in Suffolk and is nearly fully surrounded by Cambridgeshire. Its inclusion in Suffolk is said to be because it was the royal house of the South Folk and when the county boundaries were drawn.

Exning is reputed to have been the capital of the Iceni tribe, hence the Queen Boudicca depictions.
