Shipmeadow

The Sign
The name, Shipmeadow is very deceptive, with the only reference being the triangular shape with a small flag on top representing early boats sailing up the river Waveney nearby. As the old name on the post suggests, it is more to do with sheep, including the two sheep above the name. The sign was carved by Fred Howlett, the local carpenter and erected in 1982. The sign is located opposite the now redundant church, on the side of the B1062.

The Name and Population
The name means "Sheep meadow", from Anglian. It was called Scitmetdua or Scipmedu in the Domesday Book. The population was 140 at the 2011 census.

Other Points of Interest
The redundant church is dedicated to St Bartholomew and is used as a holiday home, but still retains the gravestones in the garden.

The workhouse remains, but has since been converted to residential use.
